Report: Spurs move to the front of the queue for £35million midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be weighing up a £35million summer move for Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes.

The Mirror claim that Spurs have entered the race to sign the highly-rated 20-year-old who has also attracted interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool, yet it is the lilywhites who are said to be ahead of the chasing pack for his signature.

Mauricio Pochettino lost the services of Mousa Dembele in January to the Chinese Super League and has also had to seen Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama also miss game time leaving him often short of midfield options.

This season, Fernandes has impressed for Benfica since breaking into the senior side. He has clocked up over 44 appearances in all competitions, helping his side to the top of the Premeria Liga.

Mauricio Pochettino has already revealed that he plans talks with chairman Daniel Levy this summer after five years in charge to see if the pair can agree on a future vision for the club (BBC) which is likely to involve significant investment in the playing squad.
