Report: Spurs potentially able to open talks with player after Copa America exit

Maxi Gomez’s future at Celta Vigo looks set to be decided now that the forward is in a position to hold talks following the conclusion of his international duty.

The striker, who has a £43.5 million release clause (London Evening Standard), has been mentioned in passing with Tottenham and is said to be high up on West Ham United’s summer shopping list (Express).

The report claims that the Hammers are likely to come up against competition from Valencia to land the Uruguayan forward who saw his nation’s hope of glory in the Copa America come to an end following their surprise defeat to Peru.

Valencia have offered £13m plus forward Santa Mina and youth players Jorge Saenz de Miera and Kangin Lee after seeing an outright bid rejected by their fellow La Liga side.

It is claimed that Gomez has his heart set on playing Champions League football next season which would certainly rule out a move to West Ham, the closest he will get to European football by playing for them is a pre-season friendly against Austrian Bundesliga side SCR Altach.

The Mirror recently reported that Gomez is holding out to find out whether Tottenham Hotspur want him before committing to West Ham United.

Opinion

You cannot blame Gomez for wanting a move to Spurs ahead of West Ham, there is no doubt that both clubs are lightyears apart. However, the striker would move to Spurs knowing that he would be second choice behind Harry Kane which is something not many are prepared to accept in having a bit-part role.
