Arsenal are said to be on the verge of completing a deal for Saint-Etienne central defender William Saliba.

French news outlet TF1 are reporting that the Ligue 1 side are preparing to sell the highly rated youngster for £27million.

The 18-year-old was also said to be on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur (L’Equipe) who have already completed deals for Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke from Leeds United.

Saliba has impressed over the past season in France, where he has played a sizeable amount of games despite his relatively young age.

It is claimed that he will return to Saint-Etienne on loan next season to continue his experience of playing regular first team football.

Spurs already have plenty of cover for the heart of their defence in Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez while Eric Dier has dropped back from midfield to cover on more than one occasion.

Ben Davies is also able to cover on the left side of the central defensive positions and has performed well there when called upon.

  1. Fairly obviously we were not interested in him, otherwise he would have chosen us, ahead of a cash-strapped, limited ambition, Thursday night, outfit, like the Woolwich.
