Rumoured Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Youcef Atal has suffered a serious knee injury.
The full-back had to be substituted with the help of a stretcher after just 28 minutes of Nice’s 4-1 victory against Metz on Saturday.
Atal underwent further examination following the match and it was revealed by his club he will need to undergo an operation to rectify the issue in his right knee.
The 23-year-old was linked with a potential January move to Tottenham whilst Mauricio Pochettino was still in charge of the Champions League finalists (Daily Star).
Spurs have already used a number of players at right-back this season with Serge Aurier, Kyle Walker-Peters, Davinson Sanchez and Moussa Sissoko all having featured at some point.
Jose Mourinho has favoured Aurier at right-back since taking over in North London having started all four matches in the Premier League under the Portuguese (transfermarkt).
A Nice statement on their official website read: “Bad news for Youcef Atal and Les Aiglons. Forced to go off half an hour into the game against Metz this Saturday, the Algerian international has undergone additional examinations.
“The diagnosis revealed a meniscal lesion in the right knee. The 23-year-old, who will be operated on soon, will, unfortunately, be out of action for a long time.
“OGC Nice wishes him a speedy recovery.”
Spurs now need to turn his attention elsewhere following the latest news should they have harboured any ambition in signing Atal following the arrival of Mourinho.
