Former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer took to Twitter to voice his disgust at Jordan Pickford’s challenge on Dele Alli.
The Everton goalkeeper collided with his England team-mate in the Toffees penalty area.
Dele was ruled offside by the assistant referee but Pickford still came off his line to clatter into the Tottenham Hotspur player.
Referee Paul Tierney spoke to Pickford afterwards, but did not produce a card. Shearer, who now works as a football pundit for the BBC lept to the defence of the Dele and admitted that Pickford was fortunate that the Spurs star did not take offence to his actions.
Shearer felt that Pickford should have been shown a straight red card and labelled it as ‘disgusting’.
The midfielder was seen holding the back of his leg following the incident and had to be replaced at half time by Erik Lamela.
