Heung-min Son paid tribute to Tottenham Hotspur as a club and the supporters after South Korea were victorious earlier today.
The Spurs player will be exempted from military service after helping country to gold in the football final of the Asian Games in Indonesia in a 2-1 extra time win against Japan.
Victory for Son means he can now see out his new five-year contract with Tottenham without having to return home and get by on a basic army salary.
All able-bodied South Korean men must complete 21 months service in the military as a deterrent against the North, but exemptions are offered to athletes who win gold at the Asian Games or a medal of any colour at the Olympics.
Son was quoted after the match on Twitter as saying: “Tottenham Hotspur have supported me so much and that means a lot to me.”
“I really want to say thank you to the coach and the fans of Spurs. They are so special.”
