Spotlight on Kane’s performance

Harry Kane scored one of the best goals of his career but it was not enough to give his side a crucial victory as Tottenham drew 2-2 with 10-man Arsenal.

Kane came into the game at White Hart Lane with only one goal from open play in eight appearances but the Spurs striker curled home a stunning strike in the second half to give the home team hope of victory.

OFF THE BALL

Kane started the game high up the pitch, playing off the shoulder of the Arsenal defence but as the contest wore on he dropped deeper and enjoyed more of the ball. The striker took responsibility for spreading the ball wide on a number of occasions as Arsenal struggled to keep pace with the home team’s full-backs and he was typically industrious in hunting down the Gunners’ back line.

CHANCES

Kane fired off three shots in the opening six minutes, perhaps looking to catch Arsenal’s stand-in keeper cold, but David Ospina was equal to two and watched the other sail over the bar. Kane was quiet for the rest of the first half but came alive on the hour, almost equalising with a close-range finish that was kept out by Ospina before whipping home his superb goal to put Spurs 2-1 in front. The forward could have made it 3-1 when he dragged a snap-shot just wide and then he sliced an awkward volley wide before Arsenal grabbed an equaliser.

GOAL

Kane’s goal was one of the best of the season so far and would have deserved to have won any game such was the quality of his strike. It started with Dele Alli chasing down a loose ball and backheeling it to the Tottenham forward. Kane collected it on the side of the penalty area and bent ball into the far corner, off the post and past Ospina. As White Hart Lane erupted, he ripped off his protective face mask and slammed it to the ground in celebration.

OVERALL

Tottenham will be disappointed not to have taken three points after Francis Coquelin was sent off in the second half but they can take consolation from their star striker returning to form with a goal that will go down as one of the finest in the history of this fixture.
