Spurs came within a whisker of signing Real Madrid ace claims report

Tottenham Hotspur came within a whisker of signing Real Madrid star Isco two years ago, according to the Daily Mirror.

The report claims that Mauricio Pochettino could be ready to make another move for the 26-year-old after being left out in the cold at the European champions by new boss Santiago Solari.

Isco has yet to start a match since Solari took over the managerial reigns from Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked after just four and a half months in charge at the Bernabeu.

Isco’s current contract is due to expire in 2022 and comes with an eye-watering £700million transfer release clause.

According to a report in the Independent from 2016, Pochettino enquired about the possibility of taking him to White Hart Lane on loan for a season only for Isco to become a key part of the Madrid team under Zinedine Zidane.

Pochettino said of Isco at the time: “Every coach wants to sign the best players,”

“And Isco is proving he is one of the best players in the world. We have known about him for a while, I have seen him in different clubs in his career, and he has always been a player with great creativity, great capability, beyond the average.”

Should Pochettino decide to go back in for Isco, he is expected to come up against competition from big-spending Manchester City and Chelsea.
