Spurs confirm the reason for Dier and Vertonghen’s absence from today’s squad

Mauricio Pochettino has explained the absence of Jan Vertonghen and Eric Dier from today’s squad which faces Burnley at Wembley in the Premier League.

The Belgian partnered Toby Alderweireld during Tuesday evening’s 1-1 draw against Barcelona and played the full 90 minutes.

Vertonghen has only recently returned from two months out with a hamstring injury and will now sit out the visit of the Clarets with a thigh problem, while Eric Dier has a virus.

Dier was named as an unnamed substitute for the Barcelona match.

A Tweet from the official Spurs Twitter account confirmed the news.

Instead, Ben Davies who can usually be found on the left side of the defence makes a very rare start at centre half alongside Alderweireld.

Elsewhere in defence, Danny Rose keeps his place in the side following his sterling performance at the Nou Camp and Kieran Trippier returns from a groin injury which means that Kyle Walker-Peters drops down to the bench.

Instead, Pochettino has decided to name the following team:

Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris (C), Trippier, Alderweireld, Davies, Rose, Skipp, Sissoko, Lamela, Dele, Lucas, Kane.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Walker-Peters, Eyoma, Winks, Eriksen, Son, Llorente
