Spurs to miss out on transfer target

Tottenham Hotspur are set to miss out on one of their young transfer targets after it was reported in The Sun that he is set to join Watford.

Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot is regarded as one of the best young talents outside of the Premier League and was taken out of the League Two side’s squad at the weekend to finalise terms with the Hornets.

Tottenham have a track record of nurturing young English talent, having taken Dele Alli from MK Dons and turned him into an England international and a Premier League regular, frustratingly, we have not managed to land the £1.5million player. Spurs and Arsenal are said to have had bids of around £1million turned down for the England Under-19 international.

According to the report, Watford are offering a quicker route to first team football compared to the likes of Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace told the press after the defender did not feature against Newport last weekend: “Ben came back from international duty and we have had developments that suggest a deal will be agreed shortly for him to move when the window opens.

“We have had interest from Premier League and Championship clubs, which is not surprising when Ben is recognised by England as being one of the top four centre halves at his age level, with the other three coming from Man City, Chelsea and Spurs.

“We have made public our valuation and the closer we are getting to that the more likely it is that Ben will move.”
