Spurs to snub Alderweireld for FA Cup semi-final?

Toby Alderweireld

The London Evening Standard are reporting that Toby Alderweireld will not be included in Tottenham Hotspur’s side for the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United on Saturday.

The Belgian returned to the Spurs starting line-up for the 1-1 draw at Brighton last night, his first Premier League appearance since October in place of Davinson Sanchez, who was rested for the trip to the Amex Stadium.

At 21, we all can see that Sanchez has bags of potential to be a top class defender, but he still has a lot to learn which was plain to see when he had a torrid time against Manchester City in the recent encounter at Wembley.

Pochettino has spent the last three weeks highlighting the fact that the form of his current players was the reason that Alderweireld had not been getting a look in. In my opinion, it’s simple, if we want to give ourselves the best opportunity to win silverware this season, Toby has to start against United.

Whether he will sign a new contract or not, is irrelevant. We need to be picking our strongest side and he fits into that. We haven’t won the FA Cup since 1991, we are crying out for trophies and players want medals in their cabinet.

The Evening Standard claim Spurs have decided to cash in on Toby this summer, when they can still hope to command a fee of closer to £50m due to his contract situation. The club can trigger an option to extend Alderweireld’s contract by a year to 2020 but that would activate a buyout clause allowing him to leave if they receive a £25m bid before the final two weeks of the summer 2019 transfer window.

  1. Yes simply to give us the best available line up against Manchester United, we have got the best defender in the UK so use him! If we don’t play Toby we are making our side weaker.

  2. Not a chance his choice to be greedy so he pays the price of not playing and possibly not winning a cup no one player is bigger than our club.

We’ve more than coped without him so f*** him

  3. Rookie go and support Arsenal. Fans like you are the reason spurs have won just two rubbish league cups in 27 years.

  4. let him play he still showed he can still play his heart out for the club.. he is still the best defender spurs have no matter what his situation.. doesnt every player wants what is best for them contractually?

    • We have no idea what knock on effect toby’s actions have had on the training ground or behind the scenes me thinks a lot more people would be upset if this starts to trigger an exodus or disharmony in the camp so all the hard work of say sanchez goes down the pan how’s he guna feel if he gets dropped for semi and possibly final he’s guna be around for a few more seasons yet and could end up arguably better

Good banter with everyone by the way

  5. well kenny boy we’ve pretty much got where we are in league and cups this season without him so far FACT
Not denying he is a quality player but i am questioning his loyalty trying to hold the club to ransom from a position of weakness ie not in the 1st team regularly is not an intelegent move in any buisness especially in football and especially as poch dont stand for that shit and levy hovering over smelling the colour of money or a deal that’ll make him a few quid and in my book loyalty and honesty counts for a lot not so sure about yours

  6. The Poch will decide. he is paid to make these decisions, and unlike us, he knows all the facts, and doesn’t rely on gossip. So, yes play him Mauricio – if you believe it’s the right thing do, and he is fit enough, and wants to play for the shirt.

    • Tonto my friend you hit the nail on the head when you said play for the shirt if and i stress if he is on his way after the season closes then should he play in semi or poss final surely others deserve it more who are still going to be around come august and have worked hard all the time he’s not been in the team working together forging solid partnerships building a better team for the future
