The reason why Jan Vertonghen is missing for Spurs against Chelsea

It has been confirmed that Jan Vertonghen misses tonight’s Premier League trip to Chelsea through injury.

The Belgian played in a back three in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Burnley alongside Toby Alderweireld and Juan Foyth but has since picked up a hip injury that rules him out of the match at Stamford Bridge.

Vertonghen has been arguably Tottenham’s most consistent performer this season with his solid displays week after week and was at his most impressive when he featured at left wing-back during the recent 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

In Vertonghen’s absence, Pochettino has decided on a tactical change by reverting to a back four consisting of Kieran Tripper, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies.

The severity of Vertonghen’s injury has not yet been confirmed and is considered a doubt ahead of Saturday’s North London derby against Arsenal.

Reliable football journalist Alasdair Gold confirmed the injury on Twitter.
