There was one notable absentee from Belgium’s World Cup homecoming party, Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld.

Paranoid and/or the conspiracy theorists suggested that the defender could have been on his way to Old Trafford to hold talks with Manchester United over a potential switch, however, the Belgian FA issued a statement explaining the 29-year-old’s absence.

While the Tottenham pair of Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele were presented to the crowds at the Grand Place, Toby was laid low through apparent illness.

The Belgian FA tweeted the statement: “Unfortunately Toby Aldeweireld is not able to celebrate with us today due to illness. We miss you Toby! Get well soon!”

Tottenham fans will be hoping that now the World Cup is over, Daniel Levy can get his act together and get a suitable contract in front of the player to sign.

  1. Alderweireld has received a very suitable contract offer from Spurs. As it may well be his last big contract; he cannot be blamed for looking to get more. Man. U. have said they’ll pay more but haven’t made a suitable offer for the player. Typical Woodward. He will prevaricate until Toby gets a different offer or he signs a new deal with Spurs.
