The team Spurs must pick to beat Newcastle

Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham’s performance (or lack of it) at the weekend in the embarrassing 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion was one of the worst displays I have seen from our sides in a long, long time.

If you were a neutral, you would have thought that the Spurs players had nothing left to play for this season, rather than the goal of securing a third-place finish and Champions League football.

Mauricio Pochettino needs to make some changes to his line up for the visit of Newcastle United to Wembley and shake things up. There would be one notable change in my opinion and that would be to drop Erik Lamela in place of Lucas Moura.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not Lamela’s biggest fan. His stepovers, flicks and taking the ball away from goal frustrate me greatly. Moura looked to run direct and did more in 11 minutes than what the Argentine offered in 78 minutes.

What changes would you make to the side? This is the team we would like to see start for Spurs vs Newcastle.

Lloris (C)

Trippier Alderweireld Vertonghen Davies

Sissoko Wanyama

Lucas Eriksen Dele

Kane

  1. Dier in place of Sissoko…if Dier is not still sick.
Whatever happens i believe we WILL get the 2 wins that will put us 3rd and an autom berth for CL. WBA was always going to be a slippery banana skin as it proved for other top teams.
If we cant get 3rd with 2 home games ag 2 teams already on hols then we dont deserve even 4th.

  2. With no Dier, Dembele and Kane playing with zero confidence I’d like to see:

    Lloris

    Toby Sanchez Jan
    Trippier Wanyama Eriksen Davies
    Moura Dele Son

It might mean no recognised striker but I’d prefer that than what we’ve had recently.

All of those from 3, plus Eriksen are capable of scoring. Alli is capable of being a target man if needed and Son and Moura have bags of skill and pace and would be able to get into the box when Trippier and Davies attack the wings and Eriksen can keep the pressure on just outside the box when in attack.
In defence Son and Moura have the energy to track back all day long, Wanyama is able to drop into a back 4 allowing Toby and Jan to pull out to cover the space left by the wing backs of we lose possession up and they in attack

  3. Why on earth pick Sissoko? Get Sonny in from the start and attack them from the off.

Sergio – I believe 4th spot is the same as 3rd spot in terms of CL qualification next season. There is no play-off, 4th spot is straight into the group stage. Of course I’d much rather finish 3rd (or 2nd?!) if possible!

  4. This side will give us an attacking team to pass forward and with Eriksen as central maestro he can dictate the game to three attacking areas to put in Kane. Lets be positive against two teams who as said their season is now done.Lets have the slick attacking passing forward and get Harry into a position to retain his golden boot

  5. I would defo not have Shitssoko in my team, i’d Sooner have a youth boy than him….
I’d go back to 3-4-2-1, which we had a lot of success with earlier in the season:

    Lloris

    Sanchez Alder Vert

    Trips. Moussa. Wanyama Davies.

    Eriksen. Ali.

    Kane

Bring mora on 60th min for injection of pace once they’re fatigued, Son on 70th to banboosel them, then maybe Dier for Dembele as his getting old!
