Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that academy midfielder Jack Roles has left the club to join Cambridge United on loan until January.
Roles was named in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad for pre-season tour of the Far East and the Audi Cup, in which he scored during the penalty shoot out victory against Bayern Munich.
The 20-year-old will now move to the League Two side in order to increase his footballing education with regular first team football.
Tottenham have decided to loan a number of their Under-23 side out to lower league clubs in the past week with Kazaiah Sterling joining Doncaster Rovers on a season long loan, while George Marsh and Anthony Georgiou have joined Leyton Orient and Ipswich Town respectively until January.
It is a refreshing approach to see the club deciding to give their young talent a chance to play further down the English pyramid rather than just play Under-23 football.
The challenge of playing against senior players on a weekly basis will only benefit their long-term careers, whether that be at Spurs or elsewhere.
