Video: Former Everton midfielder gives his opinion on Son’s red card

Former Everton midfielder Kevin Kilbane believes that Heung-min Son should not have been sent off at Goodison Park yesterday afternoon.

The South Korean tripped Andre Gomes during the second half of the 1-1 draw on Merseyside which saw the former Barcelona player appear to catch his foot in the turf, leaving him on the floor with a serious ankle injury.

While Son was initially shown a yellow card, referee Martin Atkinson changed his mind moments later and produced a straight red.

Son was seen leaving the field in tears after becoming distressed by the severity of Gomes’ injury.

Kilbane, whilst appearing as a pundit on BBC’s Match of the Day 2 show felt that the initial yellow card was warranted.

Opinion

There is no way that Son should have been sent off, it was an unfortunate, freak accident with Martin Atkinson reacting to seeing Gomes’ injury and punishing the Spurs player as a result.
