Video: Spurs U-18 boss praises more than just his players after new stadium win

Tottenham Hotspur Under 18 manager John McDermott has spoken of his pride after watching his side beat Southampton 3-1 yesterday afternoon.

The academy team were given the honour of playing the first football match ever to take place at the club’s brand new stadium as part of an initial test event ahead of its official opening against Crystal Palace early next month.

17-year-old J’Neil Bennett secured his place in Spurs folk law when he scored the first ever goal at the 62,062 capacity ground in the 11th minute with a beautiful right-footed curling effort into the bottom of the goal.

McDermott admitted that the staff protected the young players from how significant the occasion was and emphasised how important it was that his side did not let the club down when handed such a privilege.
