Watch: Gary Neville claims Spurs made a mistake in selling Gareth Bale

Sky Sports football pundit Gary Neville has compared Gareth Bale leaving Tottenham Hotspur to Wilfried Zaha’s situation at Crystal Palace.

Tottenham went on a £110million spending spree after selling the Welshman for a then world record transfer fee of £85million (BBC).

When Bale headed to Real Madrid, Spurs tried to fill the void by bolstering their ranks with Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Christian Eriksen, Etienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches and Nacer Chadli (Daily Mail).

With only Christian Eriksen having been the only player to have made a consistent contribution out of the seven, Neville claimed that Spurs would rather have kept Bale.

He drew a comparison with Zaha who handed in a transfer request this summer amid interest from Everton (Guardian), with Neville insisting that Palace would struggle to replace a player of his quality.
