We’re gutted – What Kane said after World Cup exit

Harry Kane believes that England have proved that they are capable of challenging for trophies after the heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker who has skippered his country at the tournament in Russia admitted that the 2-1 defeat hurts, however, everyone can be proud at how the country has performed.

The tournament is not over for England, before they return home they must face Belgium in Saturday’s third play-off.

Tottenham fans will be concerned about the state of Kieran Trippier’s fitness after the goalscorer hobbled off in tears during injury time with a groin injury. After performing at such a consistent level during the tournament, there is are fears that we may have to start the season with Serge Aurier at right-back.

“We know we’ve done everyone proud and we wanted to win it. It hurts. We can be up here,” captain Kane told ITV.

“The next step is to go one further. We want more. We’re gutted.”

He added: “We have to dust ourselves down, be proud of what we’ve done and go again in a couple of years.

“This is a great foundation we have built with the gaffer [Gareth Southgate], we are proud of what we have achieved but we wanted more and are sad we couldn’t give our fans a final.”
