Who should be Tottenham’s first-choice midfielders when fit?

Tottenham Hotspur are unsurprisingly yet to spend a penny during the summer transfer window.

With a new stadium to pay for, which is said to be in the region anywhere from £850million to a bumper £1billion, along with a huge new six-year contract for our star striker Harry Kane which is worth £200,000-a-week.  I’m genuinely concerned that Daniel Levy is not going to give Mauricio Pochettino the transfer funds to go out and bring some quality into his team before the window slams shut.

Looking at our squad, our defence and attack practically pick themselves which leaves the midfield as the focus of discussion.

Right now we have eleven, yes eleven midfielders on our books. Twelve, if you want to bring Heung-min Son into the discussion as a winger.

Victor Wanyama

Harry Winks

Mousa Dembele

Moussa Sissoko

Eric Dier

Georges-Kevin Nkoudou

Dele Alli

Christian Eriksen

Lucas Moura

Josh Onomah

Erik Lamela

Yes, there has been talk about Dembele moving on, while there has also been speculation about Sissoko and Nkoudou heading out on loan to Turkey but at present, they are still our players.

Will Onomah be given a chance? Moura hardly had a kick last season, while Winks has a lot to prove after his injury problems.

Based on the above and dreaded scenario of us not bringing in any new players. What would your first-choice Spurs midfield be going into the new season?

Let us know below.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Very concerned. Wanyama was injured a lot last year and looked a shadow of the fantastic player he had been the season before. Dier did not and has not improved at all. He always looks like a defender in midfield and OK he can play a sublime ball like he did to Alli at Chelsea away, but like Wanyama, his passing is sideways, back, or lacking. Dembele seems to be on his way which is a shame. Not enough goals or assists, but he has been a class player for 5 years. He has had some quality partnerships with Sandro, Wanyama and probably others along the way. Winks, hopefully he will mature. But worry about his injury record, lack of size, pace, power etc. Few midgets like him dominating midfields these days. He certainly isn’t box to box is he? Wilmar Barrios said to be going to Chelsea now. He was the only guy I realistically thought we were signing. This rumour we will stick with Winks and not sign anybody. What if he does have a relapse and is out for 2-3 months? The last couple of games we saw the dynamic partnership of Wanyama and Sissoko. Holy sh8t. What is our club coming to? New Stadium, great. Pochettino and Kane signed up. I know the core is in place, but really we do need back up for Kane, what if he ever breaks his leg? Alderweireld, are we not going to replace him either and why not pay his his worth, he is quality. I really was hoping for a top signing in central midfield. Maybe two. Grealish playing there, please. He needs serious time and surely will play where Eriksen, Alli, Son play, probably in rotation at best. Could Alli play deeper, maybe? Less than four weeks left in the window. Another very poor start to another window. Tough with our England and Belgium contingent still in Russia. We need outs to have ins. No space for foreign players in our CL Squad. But seriously, what is our chief scout and transfer committee doing. They are showing relegation form in that regard. £1200 for a season ticket and probably no new signings. Seriously Levied. Take Liverpool, they need a keeper, but £100m spent on 3 players and fairly sensibly in the current market. We are shopping at Poundland. Even Fulham and Brighton are signing midfield players we have been linked with or should have bought.

  2. Do not understand your angst. With few exceptions, this sounds like a solid group of midfielders, diverse in age & experience and including some competent journeymen utility players for back up. I’m expecting to see Winks back and improving. Much more of Moura who has some exceptional skills which he has already demonstrated. Lamela will show up as will Deli and Son won’t be gone for long. Ericksen is one of the best. Dier has amazing versatility. Despite the depth; I expect to see us sign a couple more mid fielders. Grealish (who is a prospect with potential) and probably one more. N’Koudou and Onomorah will likely be loaned if someone asks although it must be nearly time for Josh to get a shot. Dembele is an issue- I think he wants an easier league and a big pay cheque to finish off his career. If he stays, it’s a bonus. If he goes; it’s not like we didn’t expect it.
