Gallery: Five transfer window buys who have proven to be a bargain for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur went over 500 days across two transfer windows without signing a single first-team player. It came as a surprise for many, and angered most fans. Most pundits wrote off Tottenham’s season.

Yet despite the lack of signings and lack of squad depth at crucial times during the season, the club went on to reach the Champions League final defying all the odds.

In a previous interview, Mauricio Pochettino outlined that it would be a “painful” summer for the club (Standard), with many players likely to be shown the door. Kieran Trippier was the latest to exit the club, being sold to Atletico Madrid.

The club have been given the green light to splash the cash on new additions to the squad this summer with the help of cash generated from player sales and Champions League revenue. Spurs have already broken their transfer budget this summer with the signing of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for £55million (Guardian).

They are also close to signing Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso who said he wants to leave Betis to play Champions League football at Tottenham. (Standard)

Bringing two top-quality players into the team this summer would mean this transfer was a success for Tottenham. The Club have had many successful transfer windows in the past, signing players for a low price that ultimately became a crucial element in the starting eleven.

With that being said, we reflect on the top five best bargains the club has made in previous transfer windows.

1. Christian Eriksen

Many Spurs fans are adamant that Christian Eriksen should stay at the club. Others believe that if his heart isn’t in it then he should leave. Regardless of the debate and whether he does leave, Eriksen was arguably the best signing Spurs ever made.

Eriksen was picked up from Ajax prior to the 2013/14 season. He was a key player in the Ajax side that won four Eredivise titles during his tenure. Eriksen was named footballer of the year on three occasions during his time at Ajax.

In his first season at Tottenham, Eriksen impressed from the get-go. He landed seven goals and nine assists leaving him as the Spurs player of the season.

In his 206 eriksen premier league stats appearances, Eriksen has scored 49 goals and provided 60 assists to teammates, eclipsing the statistics of other playmakers at the Club.

His statistics speak volumes and he will be dearly missed should he leave the Club.
