Busy and tidy. His long balls offered some threat. I don’t understand entirely the relationship that needs to be maintained in positioning between two centre backs but too often these days opponents are able to attack the space between Spurs’ centre backs. The tightness and communication seems to have gone astray.

Opinion

Make no mistake, be under no illusion, this Spurs side is in deep trouble.

A game, devoid of entertainment in the first half, descended into some kind of nightmare twilight zone in the second where we lost the best player on the pitch to a horrible injury.

By the time of the Everton goal, the Spurs defence were sleep-walking, whether from delayed shock or just disbelief that they could possibly hold out for a win, who knows?

As we stagger away from the strange experience of seeing the game, there is no doubt that the concerns for the future remain stark. Tottenham barely looked like retaining possession let alone applying any sort of threat on goal.

Supporters keep looking to each next game for some sign of progress out of the mire but, as the abysmal statistics mount and as the poverty of play persists, we are left in no doubt about the trouble we’re in.

In the meantime, best wishes to Andre Gomes.
