Gallery: The top five French stars who have played for Spurs

Tottenham does not necessarily have a large connection to French football. Just 13 Frenchmen have played for the club.

But with Tottenham recently capturing the signature of Tanguy Ndombele (BBC), the figure of 13 can now be increased to 14, with Ndombele being the 14th Frenchman to put on a Spurs shirt.

Spurs signed the now-former Lyon midfielder for a club record initial fee of £53.8m (BBC). The transfer became the Club’s second of the season following the announcement of Jack Clarke earlier on the same day.

Spurs had waited over 500 days for any transfer activity, and they finally got two in one day.

With the announcement of Ndombele joining Spurs, we list our top 5 best French players to play for the club, with the exception of Ndombele who obviously is yet to play a game.

1. David Ginola

Perhaps the best Frenchman to grace a Spurs shirt, David Ginola finds himself at the top of this list.

Without a doubt, Ginola was a fan favourite during his three seasons at White Hart Lane. Not only his attacking prowess but his personality off the pitch landed him a spot in many Spurs fans heats.

In 2008, Ginola was inducted into the Tottenham Hotspur Hall of Fame, cementing his place as a Spurs legend.

He had a successful stint in North London. Ginola made 100 appearances for Tottenham scoring 12 goals.

The French superstar was involved in Spurs League Cup victory in 1999 against Leicester City. He was essential in helping Spurs reaching the final. He scored a magnificent long-range strike in the semi-final against Manchester United.

Ginola was awarded PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 1999 along with FWA Footballer of the Year.

Famously, Ginola was the only player in the Premier League’s history to play for a club outside the top six and win an award.

Most recently in 2019, Ginola participated in the Spurs Legends’ match vs Inter Milan at the new stadium. He was also present at the White Hart Lane finale ceremony in 2017.
