MF looks ahead to Spurs vs Arsenal

Emmanuel Adebayor - Tottenham Hotspur News

It’s time for the annual smug invasion this weekend as the tourists from South London make a visit to WHL. Kick off is 4pm on Sunday and we’re live on Sky where in the studio no doubt they’ll be praying for Adebayor to ping the back of the net at the Park Lane end and celebrate appropriately.

No doubt the boulangeries, charcuteries and tabacs of Maidstone, Reading and all points south of Dover that contain the hotbed of the visitor’s support will have been recently full of locals attempting revised compositions of the ‘Adebayor song’ and good luck to ’em; we sang it first and we sang it loudest as we did the Scumbell song, should anyone need reminding about who started the modern trend of employing players more usually associated with a different shirt.

Talking of which, William Gallas’s injury setback comes as disappointing news given that it’s probably only a matter of time before Ledley is back on the treatment couch. Three games on the trot is great and I hope it stretches to a hundred and three but we’d all feel more comfortable with something other than just Bassong and Corluka as cover to those fragile knees and hamstrings I suspect. The loss of big Tom is also a blow despite the fact that he’ll struggle for a first team place when all of Parker, Sandro and Modric are fit.

If Lennon and Defoe are ready for Sunday’s game then Harry has some decisions to ponder. From the noises he’s making he’d like to play Parker and Sandro together but once he’s settled on that, squeezing Modric and VdV in becomes more difficult. Last week Luka was on the right but it would not be a surprise to see Bale out there this weekend given that defensive lightweights Arseshavin and Santos may also be on that side. Up front I think most Spurs fans would like to see Defoe alongside the gooner hate figure but quite rightly Redknapp has a lot of faith in VdV’s ability to create openings & grab goals in big games. So there’s a more than reasonable chance that we’ll end up with players out of position and the side unbalanced. Never wise but not something that seems to bother Redknapp at the beginning of games at least, as long as he can fit all his match winners in.

According to the bookies we’re slight favourites. This is partly because the Arse’s season has been dominated by unwanted departures, injuries, panic buys & record low attendances at the new Library but the fact that they won their Moneybags League game on Wednesday despite resting players for our game shows that they’re far from a spent force and not to be underestimated. In Gervinho and Walcott they’ve got speed, in Arteta and Ramsey some guile and in Song and the comically named Frimpong energy. It’s at the back where they’re under the spotlight often though and it’s weaknesses there that we’ll be hoping to take advantage of.

Mike Dean is the man in charge of ensuring it’s a good clean fight.

As well as all the normal stuff it’s an important game because of the way most people think the league is going to pan out. Manchester, Manchester, Chelsea and then someone else. Our recent form means that we’ll be confident and with everyone on form and fit, we should be. Let’s stuff ‘em. COYS.
