How Son, Bissouma, and Sarr got on during Asia Cup and AFCON duty this week

Heung-min Son, Yves Bissouma, and Pape Sarr are all away on international duty this month. Here’s how the first week of the Asia Cup and the African Cup of Nations went for the Spurs trio.

After struggling through an injury crisis since the start of November, Tottenham Hotspur have a new challenge to overcome this month, with three key players absent due to commitments with their national teams.

Heung-min Son is captain of the South Korea team currently looking to win their first Asia Cup title since 1960. Son was part of the South Korea side who finished runners-up in 2015, to none other than Ange Postecoglou‘s Australia team.

Meanwhile, Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr are both in the Ivory Coast right now competing for the AFCON title. Sarr will be keen to see Senegal lift the trophy again this year, after missing out on the squad that won the competition in 2021.

How did the Spurs players perform on international duty?

The first round of fixtures from both competitions are now out of the way, so here’s a look at how the three Tottenham stars got on this week.

Heung-min Son: Played the full 90 minutes for South Korea in a 3-1 win over Bahrain in Group E. Sonny didn’t get himself on the scoresheet sadly, and even picked up a yellow card for his troubles on Monday. But, his side dominated the game and got the three points nonetheless.

Yves Bissouma: Started the game for Mali in a 2-0 win over South Africa, but was substituted after 58 minutes. Funnily enough, Mali then scored two quickfire goals on 60 and 66 minutes, but we’re sure that had little to do with Bissouma leaving the field.

Pape Sarr: Unfortunately, Pape Sarr was an unused substitute for Senegal in their 3-0 win against Gambia, though that is largely down to the fact the young Spurs man is likely to still be recovering from an injury he picked up before leaving for the tournament.
