Ex-Spurs man urges club to sign this Premier League relegation-battling defender

Former Tottenham striker, Darren Bent has claimed that Spurs should look to Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings as a potential summer signing.

Speaking to Football Insider, Bent insisted that the English centre-back would provide a great option for Jose Mourinho in the summer transfer window with the Portuguese manager looking to strengthen his back line.

Bent claims that Mings could be the missing piece to Spurs’ defensive issues after a solid season at the back for Villa, despite their overall struggle back in the top-flight.

Bent said: “Toby Alderweireld is a massive player for them and if they can keep him fit, great.

“The toughy with Spurs is – and this is where the difficulty is going to come with this team – where can they go and strengthen and where are they going to find that player?

“For them, I thought well you need defenders, I thought what about Tyrone Mings going from Aston Villa to Spurs?

“£30million, natural left-sided player, he’s got a little bit of pace about him as well and so that could work. I’d be surprised if they’re not in the market for him.”

Mings earned himself two England caps this season with appearances against Kosovo and Bulgaria coming in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 qualifiers (Transfermarkt). In the Premier League, Mings has also racked up 32 appearances in a relegation-threatened season.

In another report from Football Insider, it is claimed that Aston Villa are well aware they may be forced to allow Mings to depart this summer should they be relegated back down to the Championship.

Spurs Web Opinion

I have not been totally convinced by Mings. Had he have been a few years younger than he is (27), I would certainly see him as a potential Spurs defender but I feel he still needs a lot of improvement before he plays at the top end of the table. Perhaps a team like Everton or Southampton could be a good suitor for him if Villa do go down.
