Mauricio Pochettino says Erik Lamela is “easily” recovering his best form and can become an even better player for Tottenham.

The Argentinian forward put in a Man of the Match display and scored his first goal of the season in our 2-0 FA Cup fourth-round replay win over Newport.

The Argentine returned after more than a year out with injury earlier this season and Mauricio Pochettino hailed the player’s mentality to recover from such a difficult time in his career
“It was great for him to score tonight and complete 90 minutes,” Pochettino told the assembled press.”It’s important because he’s an important player for us.It was a massive problem that he was more than one year out. Never it’s easy to come back to the level of performance he was at before.

He added: “But he is easily going to recover his previous level, or even improve, because he’s more mature. In a tough moment you learn a lot, no doubt. I think his mentality is fantastic.”

Lamela finished a terrific move orchestrated by Heung Min Son for out second goal before half-time after a Dan Buttler own goal had put us ahead, with a trip to Rochdale awaits us in the next round.

Pochettino said: “It was a professional performance. The job is done. It was an important win and important for many players to have possibility to play.”

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. That’s fine against Newport. I would lie to see him week in and week out perform consistently in the PL (when played of course and contribute end product – goals and assists. He has not done it in any season so far. It would be great if he did. Picking up less cards would also help.

  2. He’s getting better limiting mistakes but still manages to dribble into trouble. He doesn’t seem to have quick thought when things start closing in on him. His energy is great as always has and it’s good to see him use it for something other than chasing his mistakes. It would be great if he could develop his right foot, depends too much on his left in many situations.
