Rumour Mill: Spurs Facing Competition For Croatian Defender?

According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham are facing competition for their first signing of the Summer for reported transfer target Filip Benkovic.

During the current transfer window, Spurs have so far seemingly failed in attempts to tempt several young centre-backs to North-London, missing out on defenders such as Mattias Ginter, Alfie Mawson and Juan Foyth.

With Kevin Wimmer widely expected to find a new club this Summer, Tottenham are still in need to find defensive cover ahead of the new season starting next month.

Similarly, Tony Pulis’ West Brom have also been out on the hunt for a reliable central defender to both partner Jonny Evans and commit to the Midlands club in the long term.

Last week, The Sunday People released an article claiming Tottenham Hotspur were on the trail of Croatia Under 21 and Dinamo Zagreb defender Filip Benkovic.

However now, according to The Daily Mail, West Brom have also joined the race to sign the 20 year old, with Tony Pulis having already officially enquired over the Dinamo Zagreb player’s availability.

It is rumoured that West Brom have the advantage over Spurs, as a move to the Hawthornes would present the youngster with more game-time opportunities.

Benkovic has made 48 appearances at a senior level for Dinamo Zagreb and signed a new 5 year deal in Croatia at the beginning of the year.

Doesn’t take much for a young defender to get linked with a move to Spurs nowadays, does it?
