So things are looking good under the stewardship of our new Gaffer. But can Sherwood really be our very own Guardiola? One thing’s for sure, he certainly has the players at his disposal to do it.
While we can argue that Baldini’s purchases haven’t quite set the league on fire just yet, but there’s no doubt it’s only a matter of time before they do. With the exception of Soldado all our signings are relatively young, with Eriksen and Lamela being the youngest at just 21. And I believe these two are the key to our future.
Eriksen looks cut from the same cloth as Modric. A smart player to can unlock defences and control games with his neat passing and little flicks and tricks. As we’ve seen in the past couple of games he’s starting to look like the player that attracted interest from the best clubs in Europe, and come the end of the season he could easily be our best player.
Lamela will require a little more patience from us fans. However, I get the feeling we really have a special talent in Lamela. While we have actually seen very little from the young Argentinian there’s just an aura about him that gives the impression he’ll go on to be a fantastic player. From what I’ve seen of him so far I have the same feeling that I did about Bale the season before he came good. It was 2009 and we traveled to Old Trafford in the 4th round in the F.A Cup. We lost the 2-1 but during that game Bale showed glimpses of the player he is today.
It’s also worth remembering that Ronaldo also took a couple of years to fully settle. Not unlike Lamela he moved to England for a big fee at a very young age. In his first season he was used mostly as an impact sub. Now look at the player he went on to become.
It’s been said that you win nothing with kids, but when our kids grow up we may very well sweep all before us.
