Trippier on Pochettino’s strict fitness regime

Kieran Trippier has spoken about the gruelling physical demands made by Mauricio Pochettino’s training set up according to an article on talkSPORT.

The strict regime imposed by the Argentine tactician has become the talk of the Premier League, with his Spurs’ players acknowledged as a team that set the standard fitness wise.

Trippier has revealed it took him the best part of six months before his fitness levels were deemed acceptable by Pochettino, even though the defender considered himself in good shape when he joined.

Trippier arrived in the summer of 2015, however he did not start a Premier League game until late in the December of that year.

Trippier explained what happened : “I thought I was in good shape. “When I was at Burnley and we got our body fat done, I had a really good percentage. Sean Dyche was happy. “I went to Tottenham and I was well high [in body fat] — I think they pinch you tougher at Tottenham, unless it was my all-inclusive holiday in Mexico and the mojitos!

Trippier added “It turns out I wasn’t in the best shape when I came to Tottenham and the manager let me know that. He told me that and within six months of getting there I was in great condition.

“It’s really intense. It’s relentless really, how much stuff we do. The structure is set out perfectly, whether it’s in the gym, running — sometimes double sessions. Every player at Tottenham is in great shape.”I used to enjoy myself with my missus and friends but because we are playing Saturday-Tuesday or Wednesday-Sunday, with the intensity we play at, we can’t afford to have a night out.”

The article adds that Trippier is now hoping Pochettino’s rigorous fitness schedule will stand him in good stead for the demands of a World Cup schedule next summer should he make Gareth Southgate’s squad.
