Vertonghen talks up Red Devil’s World Cup chances

Jan Vertonghen has claimed he and his Belgian countrymen will be the team to beat in Russia this summer.

The Red Devil’s face Panama in their Group G opener before games against Tunisia and of course England. Despite much promise they have been a major disappointment in recent tournaments however Vertonghen believes his side are at their peak ahead of the big kick off in Russia.

He said: “if you speak about us being at our peak here at Tottenham it is even more so with Belgium, especially defensively.”

Vertonghen says he and his Belgium teammates are feeling – and playing – like a side on top of the world. He added: “We have players like (Vincent) Kompany, (Thomas) Vermaelen, myself, and Toby (Alderweireld) who are around our 30s when you should be at your best. And I think we are now. This could be the year where we need to reward ourselves. We have had great compliments before and now everyone knows what we can do.

Vertonghen went on to say: “With Kevin De Bruyne, Eden (Hazard) and all the other guys, we should reward ourselves.”

Vertonghen said he reckons Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany, France AND England will be Belgium’s main rivals in Russia and he admitted: “You have to be lucky with the draw. Semi-finals is a realistic goal and then hopefully more.”
