What went wrong?

Everything. Everything was just wrong. The minute the team sheets were announced, I had a gut feeling that this wasn’t going to be an easy game.

We started off with probably a team weaker than that played the Europa tie at Anzhi. Firstly, Naughton shouldn’t be playing LB. It’s just wrong. But he didn’t perform all that bad today. I think he was the only defender actually playing well. Walker was not fit at all. I’m surprised AVB let him play the whole game. I expected him to go out within the first 20 minutes or so as he just didn’t seem all fit.

Our midfield, too defensive. I was hoping we’d stick with one defensive midfielder today instead of the two. It would’ve given us the edge over West Ham while attacking. If we started with Paulinho playing a bit higher up like how he did at the start of the second half, thing could’ve been a bit more different. Dembele looked tired after playing back to back games which means WE NEED CAPOUE BACK THERE. I think once he is back, he will be the only CDM we will be playing with and Paulinho will be playing in a more attacking position.

All of you who thought that Defoe should be starting over Soldado, I hope this game have proven you wrong. Europa League and other cup competitions are way different compared to The Premier League. I’m surprised we had so many crosses in today. Why can’t this be the case when Soldado starts? Yes, I know that they were very tight in the box, but Soldado has the capability to convert into chances from those situations. We had the least number of shots in ages.

What we could’ve done right?

  • Substituted Walker within the first 20 minutes or so, got in Chiriches and our back four would be Naughton-Dawson-Chiriches-Vertonghen. It would keep us defensively packed and helped us more in from the wider positions.
  • Pushed up Paulinho’s position in the first half during the break (when Jääskeläinen was changing his boots) just to break their defence a bit more.
  • Taken more long range shots! The keeper was barely troubled.
  • Not start Defoe and Eriksen together. I strongly believe that Eriksen and Soldado AND Defoe and Holtby have great understanding between each other. So, if we started with Defoe, we should’ve gone with Holtby. Similar if otherwise.
  • Played wider. It was too crowded in the middle. Whenever we tried playing wide we just crossed it in. Instead, why didn’t we have more players when we did so? WHERE WAS EVERYONE?!

These are just my thoughts on the game. Our worst performance in ages and I hope we don’t see a similar one anytime soon. AVB has alot of work to do. I hope the international break helps him decide the strongest Starting XI for us because he hasn’t played that team yet, at least that’s what I think. But all respect to West Ham for an amazing performance. I think they out played us in every aspect and well deserved the three points. I am just disappointed that we didn’t even give them a fight and just seemed so weak.

If you were AVB, what would your strongest line up be for this season?
This is mine

Lloris

Walker – Kaboul – Chiriches – Vertonghen

Capoue

Paulinho

Lamela – Eriksen – Chadli/Sigurddson

Soldado

  1. Our strongest line-up is:

    Lloris
    Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Rose
    Sandro Dembele
    Lennon Eriksen Townsend
    Soldado

That's our best team. Yesterday we lost because we didn't work hard enough, simple as that. West Ham are a very difficult team, you have to punish them when they give you a chance, JD fluffed his and then we lost all composure at the back and let the game get silly. Paulinho and Eriksen were non-existent and Vertonghen's defensive display was lazy in the extreme. He should have stopped the first and third goals.

    • Good shout for Sandro and no Dawson, cannot believe that they have extended his contract! Lennon is also another must, the problem we are all going to have tis year is that AVB will not know the best line up and that is worrying!

  2. townsend should be in for lamela..I think lamela needs time. Capoe or sandro should be used in our CDM.
alltogether it was a poor performance from our team..AVB should rethink his plan.
Its not looking so good at the moment..

  3. Capoue has started well for us but how you can play him ahead of Sandro is beyond me

Chiriches isn't ready yet, Vertonghen doesn't like playing left-back

    Lamela-Eriksen-Chadli is perfect

    • Sandro has lost his confidence, at least that's what I think. I think he is performing brilliant for us at Europa and Cup games level but I wouldnt push it.

  4. Yeah your. but kaboul should always start ahead of dawnson, and i would keep vertonghen in middle and push chiriches out to wide positions.

also sandro was out best player last season before he got injured, so why is everyone preferring capoue to him?

    my team would be:

    Lloris

    walker – Kaboul – Vert – Chiriches/ROSE IF FIT!

Sandro (maybe Capoue when fit) – Paulinho (or dembele or holtby)

Townsend/Lennon (or sometimes demebele) – Eriksen – Lamela

    Soldado.

we definately need to play out wingers on the correct side so we have no width.

i like AVB and still think he is a top top coach, but his tactical decisions and subs too often seem poor – i dont know what freud does but maybe he needs a better No. 2.

    • I think Lamela is amazing on the right side though. Hes more comfortable there.
I agree with your thoughts on AVB, spot on there

  5. Lamela?? What has he done to deserve a place ahead of Townsend? NOTHING!! I don’t care that he costs £30 million, that’s besides the point – he is no where near ready to start.

      • Time for what? A number of bloggers keep saying Lamela needs more time, for what? This was a game against a really WEAK team, and it's football, not brain surgery or auto mechanics… It's about AVB's judgement.

Does AVB think Mr Levy will shell out more money in order to lose to other low table teams? My knock on AVB is that he's over his head in the premier league. Been shown before. Porto only real success. Not a strategist or motivator.

As Spurs fans I think we need to get used to this sort of performance.

  6. When playing teams that set up to defend narrowly we need to stretch the opposition by playing wide. having a left footer on the right and a right footer on the left is not going to work. Townsend should have been played on the left. A result like this was inevitable with AVBs system im sorry but tactically as a manger he is no better than average and has proved this in his time at spurs. Last season we relied heavily on the individual brilliance of Bale to get us out of jail on several occasions and this season we have relied on 2 penalties and a 93rd minute winner to get the points against palace, swansea and cardiff. With the attacking talent that AVB has at his disposal that is simply not good enough. Remember under Harry when we were winning games 5-1 and 9-1? and that was all with a weaker team. Harry got stick for his 'just go out and play' tactics but we created a lot more chances under him than we do with AVB. Then there are his substitutions. Against Arsenal we were crying out for Holtby but it didn't happen. 1-0 up against Chelsea it was obvious that we needed to put Sandro on. Didn't happen. Im sorry AVB but i feel that by the end of the season you will have been found out as a no better than average manager. I hope you prove me wrong but i cannot see it happening so I am preparing myself for disappointment again this season. 5th at best.

  8. Absolute folly to start with Lamella as your preferred line-up. He is a million miles away from being ready. and a fucking joke to spend £30m on someone who isn't! A prime example of a Levy signing with a view to sell for a fat profit. But this one could sting him harder than the £15m loss on Bentley!

    • Lamela took time to adjust at Roma as well. If we keep denying him from playing time we are just wasting quality. Townsend is good, not brilliant. If you really think he is that shit, you should think about why he is being selected for Argentina everytime with the crazy attack they have anyways

    • Joe baldiini an't an idiot he an't gonna say spend 30mil on a player if he's no good he needs to play how ya gonna find out was he's like in ten minute appearances let the kid have a chance coys!

  9. Sometimes it is not so much down to the personnel chosen as to the mindset they walk out on the pitch with. West Ham wanted it more than we did. We looked like we thought we were going to stroll it. There just didn't seem the sense of urgency that was required and that is down to the coaching staff getting the players in the right mindset before they take to the pitch. Against a combative team like West Ham I would always start Sandro and Holtby over Paulinho and Eriksen. That would have provided more snap and urgency in midfield. Agree with comments about the width which wasn't helped by… Lennon being out. Walker having a bad day. Rose being out. etc. We must also not be afraid to lose posession so much that we pass sidewards all the time instead of looking forward. We must learn from this loss.

  10. Lloris
    Walker – Kaboul(Daws) – Vert – Rose
Sandro (or Capoue) – this would allow Paulinho to play futher forward – rather than the Dembele/Paulinho partnership
    Paulinho (or Dembele)
Townsend (Lennon/Lamela) Erkison (Holbty) Siggy (Lamela/Chadli)
    Soldado

Players in backets are second or third choice as they need to earn the right to break into the team.

  11. It doesnt matter who we play with with that attitude!

Need to understand that you dont win any games in

Premier league with the wrong attitude!!! Embarrassing

    Performance.

  12. Having options besides packing the center would be key in matches where the opponent have 10 men in defence. Our slow build-up and posession style require us to alternate width and passing type from time to time. No point in having wingers when it is only Defoe or Soldado inside the box to receive a cross. Nobody tries to chip over the defence, or dribble past a man right outside the box. And why not shoot more from outside the box, and chase the rebounds? Except for Townsend that is, but he can’t shoot and won’t pass. Our attacking mid needs to push quick inside the box, chasing the back post while our striker goes for the near post. Soldado only get scraps to score from, because we are predictable and slow in the build-up. Having Adebayor on form would actually be better, of he could catch some of the long balls, which we can’t with Defoe or even Soldado.

  13. Also need to comment on Lamela. A great talent for sure, so why not adapting the wing play based on his best features? We know he has good pace and excellent touch, so he should loose his man often if he tried to go on the outside and deliver a cross, or advance inwards and make a little flick through the back 4. Defoe and Soldado both are excellent on touch-in goals from low hard crosses, but we must have more ppl in the box first, making it harder to know where the ball will be delivered. As is now, Lamela appears like a junior compared to the will Townsend has when running with the ball. Grow a pair and start taking on the defenders dude!
