World Cup winner claims Daniel Levy pushed club’s limits over transfer deal

Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus believes Tottenham Hotspur ‘blackmailed’ the German giants into paying a Bundesliga record fee to sign Harry Kane.

Kane completed his £100m move to Bayern Munich from the North Londoners and made his debut earlier this month, coming off the bench in his side’s 3-0 German Super Cup defeat to RB Leipzig.

The 30-year-old netted his first goal for the Bavarian outfit upon his first start in Friday’s 4-0 victory over Werder Bremen and also provided the assist for Leroy Sane’s first with a deft clip over the top inside the first four minutes.

The negotiations between Bayern and Tottenham to broker a deal for Kane were certainly a drawn-out affair with Daniel Levy ensuring he managed to get every penny he wanted to the extent where CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen admitted he owes the Spurs supremo dinner the next time he is in London (Fussball News).

Lothar Matthaus shares his view on Harry Kane’s price tag

With Kane now in his thirties and having had less than a year left on his contract at Tottenham, Matthaus believes that while Bayern may have paid over the odds for the England captain, it is now down to the striker to prove his worth.

Matthaus told Sky90: “Those in charge at Bayern were and are 100 per cent convinced of Harry Kane.

“And that’s why they stretched themselves, that’s why they pushed their limits.

“And maybe Bayern has also – in quotation marks – been a little blackmailed by Tottenham.

“Another million more and a little bit more. They wanted this player.

“And I say – €100m [initial £85m fee] for a 30-year-old – Lewandowski was three years older when he left and went to Barcelona for around €50m [£42m] – I now assume that it will pay off.”

Given the fact that Harry Kane scored 30 Premier League goals last season for an underperforming Tottenham side in a highly competitive league, he should have no problem in bettering his tally of the previous campaign considering the fact that the Bundesliga is nowhere near the same level.

Tottenham fans are now waiting to see whether they will make a move for Gift Orban or another forward to help fill the void by the club’s record goalscorer after Richarlison has looked out of sorts in the first two matches.
