Report: Tottenham vote in favour of a Premier League spending cap

Tottenham Hotspur and the majority of other Premier League clubs have voted in favour of a spending cap moving forward in the domestic competition (BBC).

Manchester United, Aston Villa and Manchester City all voted against the spending cap idea, while Chelsea abstained from voting altogether.

However, the vote will do little to change the game in the short term as Premier League clubs have only rubber-stamped the plans to introduce a spending cap. The FA will now have to conduct an ‘economic and legal analysis’ to see what a spending cap model would actually look like.

When will the Spending Cap come into play?

The first draft of this model could be presented to clubs in June, at which point another vote will be conducted to approve or deny it. If the vote passes, the spending cap will come into play for the 2025/26 season, replacing the current Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Tottenham are at least interested to hear what the Premier League has in mind, but it appears Manchester United, Aston Villa and Manchester City and perhaps Chelsea are against the idea altogether.

Spurs Web Opinion:

It comes as no surprise that Man United, Man City and Chelsea did not vote in favour, as the three biggest spenders in the league. Any new spending cap model has to make the league more competitive for everyone and actually hold big teams who overspend to account.
