Are we really close to signing David Villa?

0

There’s plenty of speculation this morning claiming that we are closing in on Barcelona striker David Villa.

The rumour mill started on Wednesday evening when the radio station Cadena Ser claimed that the Spanish international was close to a move to Tottenham.

We all know how short of striking options we have been at the season. Adebayor has been playing hide and seek with his form for the majority of the campaign while Defoe has battled injuries and the subs bench.

At 31, Villa would be a good signing for us. His record for club and country speaks volumes – he was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal during January but nothing materialised.

Let’s file this one under the same rumour mill as Leandro and Christian Benteke.

David Villa Career Snapshot

Years Team Appearances (Goals)
1999–2001 Sporting Gijón B 65 (25)
2001–2003 Sporting Gijón 80 (38)
2003–2005 Zaragoza 73 (32)

  1. o my , im a spurs fan and this is just another ridiculous romour , its more like tottenham close to signing darren bent again

  2. Villa is not a Levy signing – he'll have no sell on value and is past his peak. Unless we replace defoe with him, i don't see the point.

Leandro Damio however, with the up coming world cup in Brazil much more fits the bill. He is young, should get better, should increase in value, and you could see Levy cynically attempting to break into the emerging Brazilian market with said upcoming world cup just like he did with Pinnaar and Bongani with the last one in South Africa.

  3. Well, we might be close to signing him or the club might have put this rumour out to aid season ticket sales. I would say that Daniel Levy would require Chinese torture before he would sign a 31 year old 'has been' for £10m. It won't happen.

  4. The part of me who wants to believe in Santa wants to believe that we will do this. Look at Utd this season (and Arsenal before) and where they would have finished without RVP’s goals. He is a similar age. Each goal is probably worth a million quid when we qualify for the CL. Thats the gamble and Spurs playing most of the season without a fit or in-form striker has blown our season – again. Its a miracle that we are still mathematically in with a shout. The cynic in me knows that you are right though and we wont sign him, it would be ludicrous. Why would he want to play with Thudds and Naughton, when he could go somewhere decent, earn great money, play in the sunshine and get CL football every year.

  5. Whilst I 1000% agree that Levy is embarrassingly tight with funds and this looks like a no deal every day of the week I am hoping that it will e different this summer. i am hoping that AVB said that he will give it the 1st year to give all thew players an equal chance to prove themselves (learning from Chelsea axe) and the agreement is in the 2nd year he will give the list of targets that he needs and Levy must back him or he wouldnt accept the job. It would be a great season for us if he went out and got Atsu, Villa, Damaio,Moutinho and Perreria and got rid of bentley,Ekotto,Parker,Gomez,Ade,Naughton,Gallas and Livermore. This would fill in the gaps we have in the squad and I dont believe any of those players top be an unrealistic target. Whether this will happen is another story though. Cmon Levy back the coack and the club cause you will make the money up in the first year of champions league. COYS
