Spurs defender sets high standards

Kyle Walker has insisted that he sets himself high standards and is harsh on himself if he does not reach those levels when he is playing football.

The right-back played more games for Tottenham last season than any other player in AVB’s squad. Walker’s form last season was inconsistent to say the least, he has made some silly errors which have cost us goals and still needs to improve defensively.

It seems ironic that Walker has come out with these comments, you can’t fault his attitude to always improve but he had a fairly poor season. His back-pass against Liverpool in our costly defeat at Anfield towards the tail-emd of last season still sends shivers down my spine.

Walker has become a full England international during his time at Tottenham Hotspur and there is no doubting his ability. His pace going forward is electric and his partnership with Aaron Lennon on the right flank puts the fear in defenders, especially those who are on the slow side. That pair on the right of AVB’s side will do our Tottenham’s Champions League odds the world of good next season.

At the age of 23, it is now time for Walker to start performing consistently week in week out for Tottenham if he is to live up to the billing of being one of the best right-backs in the Premier League, Walker only has Kyle Naughton for competition for his position and rumours within the press suggest that the Tottenham manager could take to the transfer market to bring in another option to bolster his defence and selection opportunities as we look to break back into the top four.  Football stats are there for everyone to see when we concede too many goals from set pieces, we need to change that in training.

It will be a huge season for Spurs, we need to show that we are better than a fifth place finish in the Premier League.

“I set myself high standards last season and I’m pleased I did, but once you set those standards, if you then fall below them people start to get on your back a little,” Walker told Spurs TV this week.

“But I’m the first to have a word with myself and say I ‘could do better’. I’ve played 100 games in two seasons – that’s a lot of games – and it took a while to get in the team.

“I was patient, got my chance last season and I have to keep doing the things that got me a chance in the first place. I want to win things here.

“If I’ve had a bad game, I’m straight home and it gets to me. I shouldn’t let that happen but I’m passionate and want to win things.

“I want to play to the best of my ability and anything below means that I’m not happy.”
