Alderweireld drops hint on Spurs future

Toby Alderweireld has been speaking on international duty with Belgium about his future at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United over the past few weeks and looks set to leave the club this summer after failing to reach an agreement with Spurs over a new deal.

Alderweireld is out of contract in 2020 and discussions over fresh terms have reached a virtual impasse. The Belgian is conscious he can leave Tottenham next summer for €25m (£22m) due to a clause in his deal, though only if an option to extend until 2020 is activated.

After Daniel Levy increased the salary ceiling at the club following Harry Kane’s £200,000-a-week six-year contract, I really hope that we can move heaven and earth to keep Toby at the club. On his day he is the best central defender in the Premier League.

Asked if he could stay at Tottenham, Alderweireld said: “Yeah, why not? I have two years left on my contract. I don’t know what is going to happen.”
