Ange Postecoglou opens up on importance of his pre-season with Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou has admitted that pre-season will be vitally important for him to get to know the Tottenham players and staff, and to embed his philosophy into the squad.

Postecoglou certainly has his work cut out at Spurs, who are coming off an eighth-place finish in 2022-23, which means they miss out on European football for the first time in well over a decade.

The squad also looks to be in need of a major rebuild since it had been constructed for Antonio Conte’s preferred 3-4-3 system.

With the players having been accustomed to a counter-attacking approach for the best part of three years, the Australian will have to embed a more possession-based, high-pressing and high-risk style of play.

Postecoglou is looking forward to Spurs pre-season

Tottenham are expected to begin pre-season training at the start of July and the 57-year-old admitted that the work in the summer will prove crucial in getting his values across to the squad.

When asked about pre-season, Postecoglou told beIN SPORTS Australia: “It’s vital, particularly with a new manager coming in, myself coming in, and that gives me time with the players, and there will be new staff in as well where we could all sort of begin to embed the kind of values and football we want to play.

“And also we get to spend a lot of time together which I think is a good thing because as much as anything else we get to know each other as people. So it’s vital to our season ahead.”

A couple of months of pre-season will not be enough for the squad to completely get accustomed to Postecoglou’s way of playing and the team will likely be a work in progress for the first few months of the season.

So, it is vital that Spurs fans are patient and do not get on the Australian’s back if results are not good at the start.

Things might not click into gear until January or February and we could be mired around mid-table until then.
