Cristian Stellini suggests Spurs star ‘loses confidence if he doesn’t feel love around him’

Ahead of the clash against Chelsea, Cristian Stellini has been speaking about the things that make him lose his temper and also discussed what it takes for Emerson Royal to play at his best.

Stellini will once again take charge of proceedings on the touchline for Chelsea’s visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Antonio Conte continuing to recover in Italy.

As opposed to the 53-year-old, who is quite an emotional figure and is often seen getting irate on the touchline if things are not going according to plan, Stellini appears to be a much calmer character.

Tottenham’s assistant first-team coach admitted that it is his children and not his players who normally cause him to lose his temper.

When asked what makes him angry, he told Football.London: “Everyone is different. Also In Italy, we have coaches who show a different behaviour so it is not important. What is important for me is that our players play a great match.

“Sometimes I get angry, [with] my children more than anything! They do what children do normally: they grow, they create problems – and the older they are the bigger the problems are so that makes me more angry than anything.

“Anger sometimes comes from love. Also a manager, if he loves his team and he loves his job, sometimes he is angry. Maybe you don’t have to show this anger because you have it inside, and you transfer it to your team after.”

Stellini also spoke about Emerson’s upturn in form over the last few weeks, with the Italian explaining that the right-back needed time to adapt to the surroundings at Spurs.

The 48-year-old also suggested that the Brazilian is better when he plays off his instinct, adding that it is only possible if he feels loved.

Stellini remarked: “Emerson is a Brazilian player. We have different cultures from Europe and South America.

“Emerson needed time to understand the difference in the culture of football, but at the same time, he has to be himself. He has to show who he is. Sometimes this type of player loses confidence if he doesn’t feel love around him.

“We don’t have to stop to give him this, but let him understand the difference in the type of football. When his pace and his intensity is really high, he can enjoy.

“When he thinks too much, he’s not the same player. So we have to follow this aspect, to feel Emerson every time being involved in the game.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Confidence is a huge factor in football and all players play better when they feel loved and appreciated but some are impacted by that more than others.

If Emerson is one of those players who needs to feel that love, the 23-year-old’s struggles at Tottenham were understandable, given the criticism he was receiving from the fans until recently.
