Defensive midfielder on Tottenham’s transfer shortlist

Tottenham are considering a summer move for Colombian midfielder Wilmar Barrios from Argentine side Boca Juniors, according to a report in today’s Sun on Sunday.

Barrios operates as a defensive midfielder (do we really need another when we already have Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama?) and is on Tottenham’s scouting shortlist for next month’s World Cup in Russia.

The 24-year-old is an international team mate of Spurs defender Davison Sanchez and his displays for Boca over the past couple of seasons have caught he attention of Mauricio Pochettino and a host of European clubs.

If we were to bring in Barrios, it would certainly signal the end for Wanyama or Moussa Sissoko (hopefully the latter).

I really hope we aren’t prioritising a holding midfielder when we should be looking to strengthen elsewhere, notably in attack. We need another striker to help share Harry Kane’s goal scoring burden.

A fee of £25million is said to be enough to land Barrios, but we all know too well how inflated a transfer fee can get if a player has a decent tournament – look no further than Sissoko for proof of that.
