Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra, a long-term target for Tottenham, is thought likely to join AC Milan on a season-long loan instead.
It had looked at one point if Diarra was on the verge of a switch of a move to White Hart Lane but his wage demands have scuppered the deal.
