‘Empty trophy room’ – Jose Mourinho takes a dig at Tottenham

Jose Mourinho has suggested that it was ridiculous for Tottenham to sack him just a few days before a Carabao Cup final, given the club’s lack of recent silverware.

While Mourinho had a relatively promising start to his time at Spurs, things started to unravel quite spectacularly a year into his time at the North London club.

The team was playing extremely negative football, struggling to score goals and constantly throwing away leads.

In fact, it was widely reported that the Portuguese coach had completely lost the dressing room during his final few months at the club, with his eventual sacking coming as a relief to many members of the squad (The Athletic).

Mourinho still holds a grudge about Spurs sacking

However, the timing of the removal certainly caught many by surprise, given Mourinho’s track record of winning silverware.

Ryan Mason was handed the reigns for the final at Wembley, with the Lilywhites falling to a 1-0 loss to Manchester City.

It appears Mourinho still has not got over Daniel Levy’s decision to sack him, with the AS Roma boss taking a dig at Tottenham.

He said on the One Obi Podcast: “This was a club that, has an empty trophy room, then sacks me 2 days before a final, I mean… come on.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As one would expect from him, Mourinho’s version of his history with Spurs is self-serving and does not paint an accurate picture of what happened. He was the first Tottenham manager to fail to finish in the top six for over a decade, which he curiously leaves out.

It is also worth pointing out that we beat Stoke City and Brentford (who were then in the Championship) in the quarters and the semifinal to make it to the final. For Jose to paint that as a big achievement is quite laughable.

The 60-year-old’s constant comments about Tottenham also showcase his neediness and pettiness. Pochetitno did not say a single bad thing about Spurs after his sacking (which he had every right to) and it is clear that Ange is cut from the same cloth, but Jose lacks that class.
