Ex-Spurs manager jokes that Levy would ‘sell his grandmother’ for the right price

Harry Redknapp has joked that Daniel Levy would be willing to sell his own grandmother for the right price when asked if the Spurs chairman would be willing to do business with Chelsea.

Redknapp was speaking ahead of being part of England’s coaching team at Soccer Aid and explained how he once tried to bring Arjen Robben to Tottenham.

The former Tottenham manager told Sport Bible (as relayed by The Daily Mail): “Arjen Robben I tried to sign him. I don’t know, he went somewhere else’ when asked why the move failed to come off.”

Former England striker Eni Aluko then questioned whether Chelsea and Spurs would do business, given the club’s fierce rivalry, and Redknapp insisted that Levy would not hesitate to sell a player to the Blues at the right price.

Harry Redknapp makes joke about Daniel Levy

The 76-year-old said: “Yeah, yeah, Daniel don’t care who he sells to, as long as he gets the money. Daniel Levy will sell to anybody. He’d sell his grandmother if he can get the right price.”

While Redknapp evidently just made a light-hearted comment, the joke might not sit well with Levy, particularly given the reputation that he has garnered in some circles as a penny pincher.

In fact, it was during Redknapp’s tenure that Levy had turned down a bigger offer from Chelsea for Luka Modric and sold the midfielder to Real Madrid the subsequent summer instead (ESPN).

Spurs Web Opinion

Levy deserves criticism for many of the decisions he has made through his Spurs tenure and one can argue that his tendency to get the best deal possible has cost us when it comes to certain transfers.

However, the one thing that the Spurs chairman cannot be accused of is trying to sell the club’s top players for big fees.

If getting the biggest offer was all he cared about, he would have sold Kane a long time ago and he would have also allowed the likes of Christian Eriksen to leave when their values were high.
