Fabrizio Romano reveals Spurs ‘on the verge’ of agreement with £40m-rated player

Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to reveal that Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of agreeing on personal terms with Brentford goalkeeper David Raya over a potential move to north London.

The Italian transfer guru has claimed that talks have already taken place between the Spanish international and Spurs with the player open to the move and has already almost agreed to a long-term contract.

Brentford and Tottenham are yet to see eye-to-eye on the valuation of the 27-year-old with the Bees’ £40million asking price considered to be too high by Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Raya is out of contract at the Gtech Stadium next summer and Brentford face a situation of either selling him this summer or risking him walking away for free at the end of the next campaign.

Romano said on Twitter: “Tottenham are now on the verge of reaching an agreement with David Raya on personal terms. Long term contract, almost agreed after positive talks.

“Raya, open to Spurs move but club to club talks will be crucial. £40m fee asked by Brentford, considered too high.”

Raya agrees on personal terms with Spurs

Tottenham are expected to lose their current number one Hugo Lloris this summer after the Frenchman revealed that he is open to leaving the club this summer with just one year remaining on his current deal.

Raya is reported to earn around £25,000-a-week at Brentford (Sportrac) which would comfortably make it an easy negotiation for Tottenham with Lloris taking home £100,000 a week.

Lloris told Nice-Matin: “We have reached an important moment, whether it be for the club or me. It’s the end of an era.

“I have a desire for something else. I will carefully study what is possible. However, I haven’t forgotten that I have a year left on my contract at Tottenham, and in football, it’s always hard to predict what will happen.”

On what he wants from his next project, he added: “The most important thing is I find a project where I thrive.”

David Raya is exactly the type of goalkeeper that Spurs need, he’s Premier League proven and would also qualify as being homegrown after he joined Blackburn Rovers as a 16-year-old.

Tottenham need a keeper who is not only a shot-stopper, but someone who is comfortable with the ball at his feet to be able to help influence play from the back. Raya fits the bill, but certainly not at £40million, a fee of £27million would be a fairer valuation for a player who is out of contract next year.
