Gallery: Cristian Romero celebrates World Cup triumph with Argentina

Cristian Romero became the second Tottenham Hotspur player in successive World Cups to lift the coveted trophy following an enthralling final between Argentina and France.

Romero was named in Lionel Scaloni’s starting eleven for the Qatar showpiece in what was one of the greatest finals in the history of the competition.

Argentina dominated for the opening 80 minutes and looked to be on their way to their first World Cup title since 1986, until Kylian Mbappe inspired France to take the game to extra time, where Romero’s side beat the defending champions 4-2 on penalties.

It was heartbreak for Hugo Lloris, who was unable to secure back-t0-back victories after both Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni both missed their spot kicks

Romero, who missed Tottenham’s last six games before the tournament with a hamstring injury has a solid match at the heart of the Argentina defence.

Tottenham fans will be wondering whether Romero will be involved in the Boxing Day trip at Brentford considering he will have little over a week to return following his efforts in Qatar. While he is a great player, his track history is clear he always puts his country before his club.
