Gallery: Five players to have played for both Spurs and Arsenal

What of those players who crossed the great divide, and played for both Spurs and Arsenal, surely none can have survived unscathed?

Oddly enough, the picture is more varied than might seem the case on first appearances. Some attract utter loathing, of course, some pity perhaps but for others it hardly seems an issue and at least one player is probably adored by both sets of fans (though smugly we can attest, mostly ourselves!).

Whether it’s more one thing than another has less to do with talent, it would appear, and more to do with personality. Traditional values like integrity, respect and humility play a significant part.

It’s integrity more than talent that enables a footballer to cross North London with their dignity intact. Pat had dignity, talent and integrity, all three, in spades. After thirteen years at Spurs even he must have thought his playing days were numbered. In fact, he played for Arsenal for eight years before returning to Spurs and playing for us again. Of course, he’s one of ours, goalkeeping coach and ambassador over many years, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he’s not just as warmly remembered by Arsenal fans. He probably endeared himself to all with his goal travelling the length of the pitch against Man U. He was a gentle giant with hands like meat baseball mitts. He would carry the ball round in one hand let alone make one-handed saves. One of the greatest keepers ever and one of the nicest of men.
