Cometh the moment, cometh the man. Harry Kane had gone off and Spurs seemed to falter. City began to build some momentum for the first time in the game. Then, a through ball. Sonny failed to control it but his speed enabled him to regain possession and then, with all these stellar talents on display, he proved the only one with the skill and composure to score. Back he goes on the radar for player of the season and, with Harry out, he might need to be there.

Match Summary

If these games were all at The New Lane, I’d have not one doubt Spurs would win all three. This was an immense performance but pride of place goes to an unsung team player – the twelfth man.

I didn’t hear a single cry from the City support until the 35th minute. Perhaps the new stadium crowd can’t be expected to maintain this intensity but this has to be the most powerful atmosphere of any stadium in any sport anywhere in the world!

The team responded and City were blunted. We are used to them strutting, controlling and inventing magic. Tonight they looked hurried, rushed out of possession and out of ideas, reduced eventually to scything down Spurs runners.

In truth, it was a magnificent occasion and a tense encounter but it was never a thriller with little invention and few chances at either end. It was a bloody, bludgeoning contest and Spurs won it.
