Mauricio Pochettino confirmed yesterday that Tottenham Hotspur will be taking up the option to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract until 2020.
The decision means that by extending his contract, the central defender will be available for just £25million next summer until 14 days before the transfer deadline.
Tottenham fans have been reacting to the news on social media with some concerned that the news means that he will be sold next summer.
Despite being constantly linked with a move to Manchester United last summer, it came as a surprise to some to see him remain at Spurs for the current season.
Alderweireld has been Tottenham’s main central defender this season following injuries to Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez.
According to talkSPORT, the 29-year-old has already refused to sign a new contract worth £130,000-a-week last season.
The fact that he is now available for just £25million next summer will mean that he will not be short of admirers from potential suitors.
Here’s how some Spurs fans have been reacting.
We had to extend his contract else we’d lose him for nothing in the summer as he’d be able to sign a contract with another club on 1January.
Doesn’t look like he wants to sign a new contract with us though so will be off in the summer instead.

Keeping him isn‘t an option. He is either gone in the summer for free or for 25m. So they decided for 25m.
Won‘t sign another contract it seems

People celebrating like it’s a good thing. It means that Spurs haven’t agreed a new deal with him so instead of letting him go for nothing, they will sell for cheap. He will 100% leave now. Levy doesn’t want to give a 30 year old a big contract. It’s the business model.

Just give @AlderweireldTob the contract he wants, and stop messing around with this extension BS. It’s clear he’s our best defender, and this decision has effectively alerted other clubs that he can go for £25m, what the actual fuck

Not good or bad news, just the administration of triggering the clause which was always going to happen. Can’t see him getting 180k pw so likely sold in the summer, real shame but nothing new to the situation than before unfortunately
