“I I think we deserved more” – Alderweireld on defeat

Toby Alderweireld felt that Tottenham Hotspur deserved more out of the disappointing 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal of the game as Manchester City moved back to the top of the Premier League table, but it was Spurs who will be kicking themselves for the manner in which they conceded Riyad Mahrez’s opener.

Spurs had their chances with Harry Kane going close twice in the first half and Erik Lamela wasting a golden opportunity late in the game when blasting over from 12 yards when it looked easier to score, although the ball did bobble before Lamela connected.

Alderweireld also felt that the Wembley playing surface made it difficult for both sides on a frustrating evening for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Two of Tottenham Hotspur’s four Premier League defeats at Wembley have been at the hands of Manchester City.

The Belgian defender told Sky Sports: “I think we deserved more, we worked very hard, and we had a good opportunity but unfortunately we missed it so it’s frustrating.

“You don’t want to concede early against Man City but our response was good though and I thought we deserved more, as I’ve said.

“Harry Kane went through one on one with the goalkeeper and with a bit more luck there we could score and the game changes.

“I have to be honest, the pitch wasn’t good. Both teams like to play out from the back and to play football in these circumstances, it was very difficult.”
