‘I’m really upset’ – Conte explains what needs to change at Tottenham Hotspur

Antonio Conte has claimed that Tottenham have to change from the top to the bottom if they want to compete for meaningful honours in the future.

The Italian boss suggested that things would not change for the Lilywhites simply by sacking him and changing manager, then changing managers again, as has been the pattern in recent years.

Spurs parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino back in 2019, before replacing him with Jose Mourinho who was later sacked six days before a cup final.

Nuno Espirito Santo didn’t last long in charge before Conte was called upon, and now even the former Premier League and Serie A winner is being questioned.

After Tottenham threw away a 3-1 lead with 20 minutes to go against bottom-of-the-league Southampton today, something seemed to snap inside of Conte and he gave his most truthful press conference yet.

Even long-term Spurs journalist, Alasdair Gold, admitted it was ‘one of the most remarkable’ press conferences he had seen in his time, with so much anger coming from Conte.

After the 3-3 draw, Conte said (Football London): “I said that I wanted to see the fire, not that I have seen. It is different. I said that I want to see the fire in their eyes, in their hearts. I want to see the right spirit. Ok.

“Not only in the training session, on the pitch. Because here you have to make the difference. And I am not saying this.

“And until now I try to hide the situation but now, there are 10 games to go and some people think we can fight. Fight for what with his spirit, this attitude, this commitment? What? For seventh, eighth, 10th place?

“I am not used to this position. I’m really upset and everyone has to take their responsibility.

“Not only the club, the manager and the staff. The players have to be involved in this situation because it is time to change this situation if Tottenham want to change.

“If they want to continue in this way, they can change the manager, a lot of managers, but the situation cannot change. Believe me.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Conte is right. You can’t change the manager and only the manager, and assume it will turn your fortunes around. Spurs have had the same core group in the squad for almost a decade now and have tried and failed for almost a decade. It is time to start fresh from the top to the bottom.
